Dorian

Thursday, August 29, 2019 -

Well, we've dodged weather so often on Dream Catcher that we feel negligent that we haven't done more to prepare our little home in Vero Beach for a storm. With a new roof, trimmed Live Oaks, and a few other upgrades, we never did choose an exterior window replacement company. In May we solicited five estimates and found such a discrepency in prices, percieved competency and honesty that we decided to wait until we returned this Fall to proceed. So, as we anxiously watch the track of Dorian toward Vero Beach we've scrambled.

Dorian's track as of Sept 1, 2019
Jackie, our house sitter, has been checking on our home monthly. She's a gem. Once Dorian became a possibility she and her husband spent extra time to secure valuables, tie internal doors closed, and take rugs up from the floor.

Rafael, our exterminator, did more of that, helping to secure more items inside.

And James, the elecctrician who did a lot of work on main circuits, Tesla charger, additional lighting and switches has spent hours securing boards to our windows.

This is before the boards, of course!!!

In addition to hurricane force winds we're concerned about flooding. Luckily (we hope) we're on higher ground than most of our island. Here's a map that shows two horizontal lines, which are bridges leading to Vero's island. We're located to the east of the top line on the grey area, which is not part of the blue or yellow flood areas. Here's hoping!

Hurricane Dorian has passed, but it wreaked havoc and destruction on the Bahamas. It made it's way up the East Coast making it's presence known in an awful way. After all of our preparations to our home in Vero Beach Dorian turned North at the very last minute and spared us. Our home is fine. But, we are so sad and concerned about the Bahamas and others in its destructive path.

We found our own way to donate to the relief efforts in the Bahamas and we hope you will consider doing the same.  Our choice was https://www.gofundme.com/f/hurricane-dorian-grand-bahama-relief-fund, the fund by Matt Winslow.
Others can be found at: https://www.percabaco.org  https://www.bahamas.com/relief
More information and regular updates on progress can be found at https://www.hopetownsailingclub.com.

By now, you may have seen many more options for giving as every significant relief organization is trying to assist with this awful disaster. We hope you can contribute in whatever small or large way you are able.  The Bahamian people live a simple life and have little.  We are not talking about the large resorts that will be fine.  We are talking about helping those who have lived their lives in a simple and humble way, while providing service to those who vacation in and enjoy visiting the Bahamas.  We are talking about helping to keep tourism alive in the tiny Bahamian islands so that they can earn a living in the future.  We hope you too can help.

'Til next time -
