Today we were able to have a local (Annapolis) canvas guy sew three solar panels on our dodger & bimini. These are flexible panels about 1/32 inch thick and each 5 x 2.5 foot panel weighs less than 5 pounds.
Each panel can charge the batteries 137 watts for a total potential charge of 411 watts per hour. That's 34 amp hours since we have a 12 volt system ( you divide the watts by volts to get amp hours - Ah).
Our electrical usage is mostly the refridgeration system (6aH), lighting (3-5Ah since it's all LED), running computers (6 Ah each), WiFi cards, phone charging, etc. When we're not sailing we use about 140 Ah a day. When we are sailing (no engine running) we use more like 240 since the chart plotter and nav equipment uses a considerable amount. Night sailing uses more.
So, even on moderately sunny days we ought to have as much electricity as we need. Nice!
